Street art and graffiti legend El Mac was recently in Sedona, Arizona where he painted this new commissioned mural featuring two embracing figures based on the artist’s mother-in-law and her granddaughter.
The mural intends to express familial love and joy, which according to El Mac had such an impact on his mother-in-law while going through cancer treatment during the last few years. The mural is also an homage to Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt and his Beethoven Frieze (1902) based on Richard Wagner’s interpretation of the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, celebrating humankind’s yearning for happiness. The singing angels in the frieze, also represented here, refer to the symphony’s closing choir and Friedrich Schiller’s famous ode To Joy that begins with the line: ‘Joy, beautiful spark of divinity…’. Lovely piece.
