On Saturday 16th this month opened L.A. based Corey Helford Gallery an incredible show featuring the work of Pop Surrealist legend and pioneer Camille Rose García consisting in a new body of work with her newest series of gothic-psychedelic paintings.
As mentioned in an earlier post a few weeks ago, “Phantasmacabre”, as the show was titled, is influenced by the surrealist and deeply symbolic films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Jungian archetypes, and fairy tales that depicts a lush and layered symbolic world that explores the realm of memories and dreams. The world in García’s paintings is both beautiful and frightening. Its psychedelic dream scenes are inhabited by witches, ghosts, skulls, insects and snakes in gardens filled with intertwining branches and plants growing from their wounds in a dance between life and death.
In order to celebrate García’s first solo show in Los Angeles since 2011 and debut the biggest paintings of her career, the gallery organized a fabulous VIP reception (7/15) and opening night (7/16) that counted with the participation of acclaimed artists like Mark Ryden and his wife/artist Marion Peck, musician Davey Havok (AFI), as well as Elizabeth McGrath, Olivia De Berardinis, Brandi Milne, Natalia Fabia, Soey Milk and world-renowned fantasy artist Jasmine Becket-Griffith who opened her solo show “Allusions and Allegories” in Gallery 2.
Both nights featured music provided by DJ Chris Muckley from KCRW/SiriusXMU as well as a burlesque performance from Vanessa Burgundy and Kira Von Sutra.
